Navajo Rug
By Ian Tyson
as played by Jerry Jeff with *capo on 2nd fret*
Intro: G Em C D (2x)
G
It's two eggs up on whisky toast
Am
Home fries on the side
C* *I like C here, but JJW stays on Am
Wash em down with the road house coffee live. Pick what you like best.
D
That burns up your insides
G
Just a Canyon, Colorado diner
Am
And a waitress I did love
C
We sat in the back
'Neith and old stuffed bear
D
And a worn out Navajo rug
CHORUS:
G Em
Aye-yi-yi Katie
C D
Shades of red and blue
G Em
Aye-yi-yi Katie
C G
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you
Well, old Jack the boss, he left at six
And it's Katie bar the door
She pulled down that Navajo rug
And we spread it 'cross the floor
I saw lightning frame the Sacred Mountains
Saw the wooing of a turtle dove
Just lying next to Katie
On that old Navajo rug
REPEAT CHORUS
Well, I saw old Jack about a year ago
He said the place burned to the ground
All he'd saved was an old bear tooth
And Katie, she left town
Well Katie got a souvenir, too
Jack smiled as he spit out a big old plug
Well, you should have seen her comin' through
the smoke
She was draggin' that Navajo rug
REPEAT CHORUS
So everytime I cross the Sacred Mountains
And lightning jumps above
It always takes me back in time
To my long lost Katie love
You know, everything keeps on a-movin'
Hell, everybody's on the go
You don't find things that last anymore
Like a hand-woven Navajo
REPEAT CHORUS TWICE
-----
Ok, the little fill thing is pretty easy to play. I don't have the patience to
type out the tab, so I'll just explain it. It goes over the two bars of
A F#m D E (fingered as G Em C D with the capo on the 2nd fret)
It starts on E and works backwards down the A-major scale.
The first phrase goes from E straight down the scale to A. (over the A chord)
The next phrase starts on C# and ends on F# (over the F#m chord and, again,
straight down the scale). The next phrase is a little trickier. It starts on
A and goes straight down almost an octive to B (over the D chord) then you
have to fill something in over the E chord that ends on A. John does it
a little different every time. Listen to the album.
The next time through you do the same exact thing except you just end on
a sustained B note and then go into the verse. I hope that gives you an idea.
